About the Role
Provide support to all teaching laboratories by preparing equipment, supplies, and reagents; ordering from outside vendors, overseeing inventories and maintenance; and ensuring that biological and hazardous wastes are disposed according to proper procedures.
Responsibilities
The responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Coordinate and Support Laboratory Operations
- Work with faculty and student laboratory assistants to ensure that the proper supplies and equipment are in place and ready for all student labs each day.
- Assist faculty in the training of student laboratory assistants on procedures of reagent and equipment preparation, waste and disposal, and other matters related to lab setup and lab safety.
- Maintain the stockroom in an organized manner.
- Maintain an adequate inventory in the stockroom of routinely used chemicals and expendable supplies.
- Oversee Maintenance and Service of Equipment
- Provide routine service for microscopes and other equipment.
- Create and oversee work orders related to repairs of departmental equipment and infrastructure.
- Maintain inventory asset controls for designated departmental property and equipment.
- Serve as Chemical and Biological Safety Officer for Department
- Work with faculty to ensure that proper guidelines for the storage, labeling, and handling of chemicals and waste are adhered to.
- Coordinate the collection and removal of hazardous waste in the department by working with the Environmental Health and Safety Coordinator.
- Collect the biannual chemical inventory updates of labs that are conducted by faculty.
- Acquire and maintain Material Safety Data Sheets related to all new chemicals purchased.
- Ordering, Receiving, and Distributing Equipment and Supplies
- Conduct appropriate research on items to be purchased, maintain relationships with and interact with vendors to obtain quotes, learn about new products, ensure accurate orders, and obtain best prices.
- Work with faculty to determine needs and make purchases of equipment, chemicals, specimens, and other lab supplies.
- Perform all other related duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in chemistry, biology, biochemistry, cell biology or other natural, life, health care or materials science directly related to the research area with one year of applicable experience in a lab setting.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with modern biological laboratory and field techniques.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
- Abilities: Ability to maintain confidentiality, to be highly motivated, and to work well with faculty and students.
- Knowledge: Must be knowledgeable about modern laboratory and field research techniques including knowledge of chemical and biological safety. Proficient in Microsoft Office and other computer software/databases.
- Skills: Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills. Must have a high level of organizational skills and be detail oriented.
Pay & Schedule
- Shift: Days/M-F
- Pay Band: B6
- Salary Range: $18.85/hourly - $20.19/hourly
- Salary to be commensurate with qualifications of the selected candidate within the established range (generally minimum-midpoint) of the position.

Those candidates trained by a foreign institution will also be required to provide an educational/credential evaluation.
