About the role

Supervises Laboratory Analysts, plans and coordinates laboratory work, reviews in-house and contracted lab results, and manages laboratory inventory and equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Supervises, directs, and evaluates assigned staff, including hiring, termination, scheduling, training, performance appraisals, and salary recommendations.
  • Plans and coordinates laboratory work, records results, and performs quality control.
  • Coordinates with external laboratories for special sampling and communicates testing results to plan supervisors.
  • Maintains laboratory inventory and ensures equipment operates correctly.
  • Drives a City vehicle for business use.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Associate's degree from an accredited college or university in Environmental Science or Microbiology.
  • At least three (3) years of experience in water/wastewater laboratory analysis.
  • Valid Texas Driver License (or ability to obtain within 6 months of employment).
  • Lab analyst certification from Texas Water Utilities Association must be obtained within one (1) year of employment.
  • State of Texas TCEQ Plant Operation License is desirable.

Skills

  • Knowledge of laboratory management and operations, wastewater analysis, permits, and regulations.
  • Knowledge of modern office procedures, computers, and applicable software.
  • Knowledge of English grammar, spelling, and punctuation, and basic math.
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of employee supervision.
  • Skill in organization, time management, and performing varied duties.
  • Ability to analyze and interpret results, build effective working relationships, and communicate clearly both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to maintain planning and organizational skills, follow and give directions, and comply with City policies.
  • Ability to perform strenuous and routine work, project a professional image, and maintain good health and physical condition.
  • Bilingual ability (English and Spanish) preferred.

Work Environment & Physical Demands

  • Primarily office or indoor laboratory environment with occasional exposure to unpleasant conditions or hazards.
  • Occasional outside work and exposure to fumes, airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and communicable diseases.
  • Frequent need to exert up to 35 pounds of force occasionally, and up to 20 pounds frequently.
  • Sedentary work with occasional walking and standing.
  • Local travel may be required; no international travel.
