About the role

This position functions as an advanced level (specialist) laboratory scientist serving as a senior worker and performing a full range of professional assignments involving the analysis of environmental and biological samples of epidemiological importance for persistent and non-persistent organic pollutants, and various industrial and environmental contaminants. The analysis includes sample preparation, extraction, cleanup, and qualitative/quantitative analytical analysis using gas chromatography (GC), liquid chromatography (LC), gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC-MS, GC-MSMS), liquid chromatography mass spectrometry (LC-MSMS), and other laboratory methodologies. The incumbent ensures accurate data is obtained and reported in a timely manner through the current laboratory information management system. The Laboratory Scientist Specialist participates in methods evaluation, development, validation, and documentation of laboratory methods, practices, and policies.

Responsibilities

• 60% of time: Perform analysis of environmental samples, food, water, and biological matrices for trace quantities of polybrominated biphenyls (PBBs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), per- and polyfluorinated substances (PFASs), chlorinated pesticides, and other contaminants.
  • Review sample data for integrity, accuracy, and QC criteria; report results.
  • Log batches of samples into StarLIMS (laboratory information system).
  • Prepare samples for GC-MS, GC-MS/MS, HRMS, and LC-MS/MS analysis, including extraction, cleanup, and column chromatography.
  • Report data through StarLIMS or other systems.
  • Prepare and aliquot analytical standards from stock solutions.
  • Use instrument data analysis software for acquisition, processing, and report generation.
  • Perform statistical analysis of test data and validation studies.
  • Recalculate and re-analyze data as needed.
  • Analyze proficiency testing materials.
  • Monitor and replace condensing and instrument gases.
  • Prepare detailed reports, archive data, and maintain records.
  • Ensure proper disposal of biological and chemical waste.
  • Follow laboratory safety, infection control, and chemical hygiene procedures.
• 20% of time: Troubleshoot and maintain analytical instruments.
  • Perform preventive maintenance on instruments (source/detector, column/inlet, vacuum systems).
  • Monitor equipment performance and maintain records.
  • Review instrument calibration, QC, and sample analysis data.
  • Prepare QC charts using statistical software.
  • Maintain and evaluate QC records for trends.
  • Coordinate with service vendors for repairs or maintenance.
  • Ensure inventory of consumables, reagents, and gases.
• 15% of time: Lead and support methods development and validation.
  • Design and implement method validation studies.
  • Review and update laboratory procedures annually.
  • Collaborate on methods evaluation and modification.
  • Evaluate new laboratory instruments and equipment.
  • Review scientific literature for methods development.
  • Organize and perform laboratory studies for methods development.
  • Prepare reports on methods development and validation.
  • Train staff on laboratory procedures and methodologies.
• 5% of time: Support special projects and emergency response.
  • Participate in Michigan Bioterrorism and Chemical Terrorism Public Health response teams.
  • Review scientific literature and design laboratory studies.
  • Prepare reports and critique scientific documents.
  • Assist in bioterrorism/chemical terrorism preparedness and response.
  • Respond to incidents requiring stat laboratory assistance.

Requirements

Education: Advanced degree preferred in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biology, or a similar field.

Experience: 5+ years with GC-MS, GC-MSMS, and LC-MS/MS in a diagnostic, public health, or environmental laboratory.

Pay

$65,436.80 - $95,388.80 annually

Classification: Exempt from overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act.
