Laboratory Research Professional

We are seeking a full-time (1.0 FTE) open-rank Laboratory Science Professional to join a research laboratory within the Department of Craniofacial Biology. This term-limited position is funded for two years and focuses on a project exploring the effect of antibacterial polymers within dental composites, aiming to provide therapeutic directions for the prevention of dental caries.

About the Role

This position involves working in a materials science lab that develops smart polymers for drug delivery and dental applications. The role requires handling chemicals, biological materials, and potential hazards in a wet lab environment. You will assist the Principal Investigator and research team with polymer-based biomaterials projects, focusing on the development and evaluation of polymeric materials for medical and dental applications.

Responsibilities

• Collaborate with and support the Principal Investigator (PI) and research team with laboratory and research functions.
• Utilize a variety of laboratory techniques required for research projects.
• Perform experiments, tabulate and analyze data, and write reports for publications.
• Support analytical testing, including sample preparation, documentation, and communication of results.
• Prepare and maintain the lab for daily operations, including stocking materials, equipment safety checks, and cleanliness.
• Pick up, transport, and maintain samples, documents, and materials as needed.
• Independently review scientific and technical literature and share findings at weekly lab meetings.
• Maintain a detailed notebook of experiment activities and ensure compliance with EHS safety requirements.
• Order supplies and reconcile monthly expenditures.

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications

• A bachelor’s degree in biology, biochemistry, microbiology, chemistry, chemical and biological engineering, or a directly related field from an accredited institution. A combination of education and related technical/paraprofessional experience may substitute for the bachelor’s degree on a year-for-year basis.
• Intermediate Professional: One year of professional experience in a dental clinic or dental materials lab environment.
• Senior Professional: Two years of professional research experience, with at least one year in a dental clinic or dental materials lab environment.

Preferred Qualifications

• Prior experience working as a dental assistant.
• Experience working with tooth samples to create restorations and testing them in environments resembling the oral cavity.
• Experience formulating, synthesizing, and characterizing the material property evolution and reaction kinetics of nanogels and hydrogels.
• Experience identifying patentable inventions.
• Experience reviewing, interpreting, developing, and implementing new or modified laboratory techniques for research projects.

Conditions of Employment

• Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without requiring sponsorship.
• Ability to lift, push, and/or pull up to 20 lbs.
• Work in an environment with potential exposure to fumes, chemicals, liquid nitrogen, extreme cold, blood/body fluids, and infectious disease.
• Frequent handwashing due to biohazardous materials.
• Ability to sit, stand, walk, bend, stoop, and perform repetitive motions for extended periods.
• Work with complex and sharp laboratory equipment, as well as chemical and biological solutions.
• Wear appropriate safety equipment when handling biological samples and hazardous chemicals.
• Work within a high-level secured facility.

Pay

• Intermediate Professional: $52,030–$66,182
• Senior Professional: $56,249–$71,548

This position may be eligible for overtime compensation, depending on the level. Total compensation includes generous leave, health plans, and retirement contributions.
