About the role

Manage day-to-day activities within the research laboratory, including ensuring the operation of essential equipment and making sure adequate supplies are available for routine experimental procedures.

Maintain laboratory consumables and reagents inventories.

Order and receive supplies and equipment.

Act as liaison between the laboratory and host biosafety and regulatory offices (Environmental Health and Safety, IACUC, Institutional Biosafety Committee) to ensure compliance with all applicable regulations governing work with bacterial pathogens and animal models.

Care for biosafety compliance and animal protocol documentation.

Coordinate amendments and renewals for lab permits, licenses, and protocols, including animal protocols and biosafety approvals.

Oversee service contracts and repairs of laboratory equipment.

Maintain records of asset locations and participate in periodic asset inventories.

Act as liaison between the lab and HHMI, and host institution administrative offices on issues such as procurement, MTAs, lab staff transitions, visas, budgets, and use of host accounts.

Develop laboratory guidelines, maintain procedures manuals, evaluate new materials and equipment, and create process improvements for the lab.

Train incoming personnel in proper lab conduct and, where applicable, in technical areas and complex processes; may plan for and provide working supervision to research technicians or other laboratory personnel of lower grade.

Manage adherence to institutional biosafety and animal care and use standards, keep compliance records/logs current, maintain current knowledge of applicable health and safety regulations, and liaise with host regulatory offices to ensure compliance and participate in periodic regulatory review.

Attend and participate in weekly lab meetings; the chosen candidate is also encouraged to engage in science projects.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree required, preferably in a health or physical science, a PhD in biomedical science is preferred.
  • Three or more years of laboratory experience, including at least one year of supervisory experience, preferred.
  • Interest in scientific work and the research being conducted by the lab.
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to plan effectively.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to initiate and compose written communications for various purposes in an appropriate style, along with strong record-keeping skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Ability to work inclusively and collaboratively with a diverse population and to succeed in a fast-paced, collaborative laboratory environment.
  • Operational knowledge of advanced lab equipment.
  • Ability to supervise others and develop instructional material for routine training purposes.
  • In-depth understanding of organizational structure both within and outside the work unit, including the role of each position in the group and in other groups.
