Laboratory Manager - Hematology & Oncology

Responsibilities

  • Perform tissue dissections and DNA and RNA extraction from mouse and human specimens.
  • Support ongoing laboratory research projects and independently oversee designated scientific projects as assigned.
  • Analyze experimental data and maintain accurate laboratory records.
  • Collaborate with laboratory investigators and research staff on experimental design and implementation.
  • Perform animal husbandry activities in compliance with Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) policies and federal regulations.
  • Maintain mouse colonies, including genotyping, breeding and colony management.
  • Organize, maintain, and update laboratory protocols, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and regulatory documentation.
  • Maintain laboratory organization, cleanliness, and compliance with institutional safety, biosafety, and regulatory requirements.
  • Maintain laboratory equipment and coordinate preventative maintenance, repairs, and calibration.
  • Manage laboratory inventory, including ordering, receiving, and stocking reagents, consumables, and laboratory supplies.
  • Maintain accurate inventory records and establish effective relationships with vendors and suppliers.
  • Train and onboard laboratory personnel, students, and research staff on laboratory procedures, equipment, and safety practices.
  • Coordinate laboratory purchasing, procurement activities, invoice reconciliation, and budget tracking.
  • Maintain purchasing records and assist with laboratory financial management.
  • Coordinate interactions with Columbia University administrative offices, core facilities, academic collaborators, and industry partners.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent in education and experience, plus four years of related laboratory experience.
  • A Master's degree may substitute in part for experience.
  • Experience managing or organizing a mouse colony.
  • Familiarity with basic molecular biology techniques.
  • Strong organizational skills with exceptional attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently while contributing effectively within a collaborative team environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with laboratory automation platforms, including the Biomek i7 or similar liquid handling systems.
  • Experience with chromatin biology, epigenetics, genomics, or hematologic malignancy research.
  • Experience with DNA/RNA extraction, gene expression analysis, and next-generation sequencing workflows.
  • Experience assisting with grant preparation and laboratory administration.
  • Prior experience managing laboratory operations in an academic research environment.
