About the Role

The Laboratory Equipment Designer (Electronics) will repair and maintain laboratory equipment across the Wadsworth Center’s four sites, as well as related electronic systems. Responsibilities include modifying laboratory equipment, performing necessary repairs and calibrations, and procuring replacement parts, supplies, and services from vendors or manufacturers. The incumbent will collaborate with scientists to ensure equipment design and modifications align with experimental requirements and coordinate with program staff to assemble and maintain repair orders, purchase requests, inspection records, and certification documentation.

Responsibilities

  • Repair and maintain laboratory equipment and related electronic systems.
  • Modify laboratory equipment to meet experimental requirements.
  • Perform repairs, calibrations, and procure replacement parts and supplies.
  • Collaborate with scientists to align equipment design with experimental needs.
  • Coordinate with program staff to manage repair orders, purchase requests, inspection records, and certification documentation.
  • Research and resolve equipment malfunctions and failures independently.

Requirements

  • High School diploma.
  • Two years of experience in the construction, design, operation, and repair of special machines, tools, and/or equipment fabricated for laboratory use.
  • Valid, unrestricted NYS driver's license (required for travel between sites).
  • Ability to travel throughout New York State, including overnights to areas not served by public transportation.
  • Willingness to wear personal protective equipment due to potential exposure to hazardous substances.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with specialized equipment in health-related and laboratory environments.
  • Proficiency in evaluating, modifying, designing, fabricating, operating, troubleshooting, and maintaining electromechanical laboratory devices and equipment.
  • Strong computer skills, including familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite and Adobe products.

Pay

For new State employees appointed to graded positions, the annual salary is the hiring rate of the position (beginning of the salary range). Promotion salaries are calculated by the NYS Office of the State Comptroller in accordance with NYS Civil Service Law, OSC Payroll rules and regulations, and negotiated union contracts.
