Laboratory Assistant PRN
Job Summary
As a Laboratory Assistant, you will perform various functions in the laboratory of a technical or clerical nature. You will be responsible for phlebotomy, specimen processing, specimen plating in microbiology, histology assistance, preparing specimens for referral to other laboratories, and reporting and document filing.
Qualifications
- 1 year of experience performing hospital phlebotomy (if primary responsibility is phlebotomy)
- High school graduate or GED equivalent
- Formal phlebotomy training from an accredited program – preferred
What You Will Do
- Collect, process, and transport specimens
- Identify proper tubes, containers, transport media, and storage temperature for each test type
- Ensure positive identification of each patient and respective samples
- Keep collection trays and outpatient collection area neat and well stocked
- Perform specimen processing for various sub-departments
- Assist in microbiology, including plating cultures, setting up antigen detection assays, quality control, and maintenance checks
- Assist in histology, including performing basic procedures, performing routine maintenance, and assisting in tracking specimens
- Answer phones, relay messages, and transfer patient test results
- Distribute reports to Health Information Management, physicians, and clients
- Maintain records of standing orders for outpatients
