About the role
Perform venipuncture, skin puncture, and pre-analytical and post-analytical steps of laboratory testing.
Responsibilities
- Uphold Kaiser Permanente’s Policies and Procedures, Principles of Responsibilities, and applicable state, federal, and local laws.
- Select the appropriate phlebotomy technique relative to the age and physical maturation of the patient.
- Assess the quality of blood to be drawn based on the patient’s age, physical maturation, and the test or study to be performed.
- Perform venipuncture, finger stick, or heel stick proficiently on patients of all ages.
- Properly label samples and transport them to the laboratory or Clinical Laboratory Scientist as required.
- Perform the pre-analytical phase of testing, including bar coding, centrifuging, separating, logging, culturing, and staining of bacteriological specimens.
- Monitor and maintain appropriate inventory levels of supplies and reagents.
- Establish and maintain courteous, cooperative relations with the public, patients, and other personnel.
- Perform additional duties such as checking in patients, collecting revenue, accessioning test orders, and providing preparation instructions to patients.
- Handle difficult patients in a professional manner.
- Display professionalism at all times, both in attitude and appearance.
- Follow directives from supervisors, leads, and seniors.
- Assume other activities and responsibilities as directed.
Requirements
- One (1) year of phlebotomy experience in an acute care medical center, non-acute care setting, or equivalent military experience.
- High school diploma or General Education Development (GED).
- Phlebotomy Technician II Certificate (California) OR Phlebotomy Technician I Certificate (California). Note: The SCPMG Regional Reference Lab does not require phlebotomy certification.
- Demonstrated ability to perform the duties and responsibilities of the job at a fully satisfactory performance level.
Preferred Qualifications
- Relevant college courses in the life sciences.
Schedule
Rotating weekends. Schedule subject to change based on operational needs.
- Week 1: Sun 2:30–11:00 PM, Mon 2:30–6:30 PM, Wed 2:30–6:30 PM; Tue, Thu, Fri, Sat OFF.
- Week 2: Sun, Wed, Thu & Fri OFF; Mon, Tue & Sat 2:30–11:00 PM.
Pay
$32.47 - $35.81 / hour. Kaiser Permanente strives to offer a market-competitive total rewards package and is committed to pay equity and transparency. Actual base pay determined at offer will be based on labor market data, internal alignment, and a candidate's years of relevant work experience, education, certifications, skills, and geographic location.

- Work Setting: Onsite (worker location must align with Kaiser Permanente’s Authorized States policy).
