Laboratory Assistant II
About the Role
Under the direction and oversight of the Laboratory Director and Laboratory Manager, or designee, this position operates within the scope of Unlicensed Laboratory Personnel as described in B&PC 1269. Responsibilities include receiving and processing specimens, performing clerical tasks, and conducting phlebotomy. The role may also involve operating automated or semi-automated test equipment or processing microbiology specimens under the direct and constant supervision of a licensed person, as authorized by California lab law.
Responsibilities
- Draws blood from patients' fingers, heels, or veins, observing principles of asepsis to obtain blood samples.
- Ensures the correct amount and type of specimen is obtained.
- Documents all requests and released results of lab work accurately.
- Informs physicians of released lab results.
- Completes appropriate routing, handling, and processing of various medical specimens.
- Orders, distributes, and stocks supplies as needed.
- Trains and reports on the work performance of other Laboratory Assistants.
- Performs other related duties as necessary.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Phlebotomy Technician II Certificate (California) or Phlebotomy Technician I Certificate (California).
- Ability to perform all Laboratory Assistant I duties.
- Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
- Ability to write simple correspondence.
- Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees.
- Willingness to work in a Labor Management Partnership environment.
Schedule
- Scheduled Weekly Hours: 12
- Shift: Evening (2:30 PM – 11:00 PM)
- Workdays: Week 1: Sunday, Monday; Week 2: Saturday. Scheduled days and hours are dependent on departmental needs and may include holidays and weekends.
Pay
$39.79 - $41.87 per hour. Actual base pay determined at offer will be based on labor market data, internal alignment, and a candidate's years of relevant work experience, education, certifications, skills, and geographic location.
Work Setting
- Onsite at Santa Clara Hospital, Pathology/Lab.
- Worker location must align with Kaiser Permanente's Authorized States policy.
