About the role

The Laboratory Assistant performs specimen receiving and processing duties, registers patients, enters orders in the computer system, centrifuges specimens, labels and aliquots samples, delivers to test sites, stores samples, slides, blocks, etc.

Responsibilities

  • Supports patient registration and third party reimbursement requirements.
  • Maintains department supplies and customer supply orders.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of specimen collection and handling requirements.
  • Processes pathology specimens as appropriate.
  • Trains staff as required.
  • Works flexible hours to meet department needs.
  • Responds proactively to customer service issues.
  • Assists in maintaining and cleaning of laboratory equipment.
  • Maintains compliance with policies and procedures.
  • Maintains confidentiality of patient records and hospital matters.
  • Documents specimen quality issues.
  • Maintains productivity, customer satisfaction, and profitability.
  • Reads and understands physician's laboratory test orders.
  • Schedules Pathologists, Histotechnicians, or Transportation Reps as needed.
  • Assists with bone marrow collection and processing.
  • Performs phlebotomy as necessary (must have approved competency).

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalency.
  • Two (2) years of laboratory experience or patient care experience.
  • Current student seeking higher educational degree or certification in a science field may substitute up to two years of the required experience.
