Laboratory Assistant - Histology - Full Time, Evenings
NYU Langone Hospital—Suffolk is a 306-bed medical center providing care to residents of eastern Long Island. The facility includes the Knapp Cardiac Care Center, a modern ambulatory surgical pavilion with specialized services such as women's imaging, a sleep laboratory, and bariatric surgery. It operates a Provisional Level 2 Trauma Center, a Primary Stroke Center designated by the New York State Department of Health, and multiple outpatient sites including a wound care center, hemodialysis center, and various primary care and specialty offices.
About the role
We have an exciting opportunity for a Laboratory Assistant - Histology to join our team on a full-time, evening shift (Monday - Friday). In this role, you will assist lab staff with the day-to-day operations of the laboratory, providing clinical, clerical, and inventory management support. This includes specimen management, inventory control, instrument maintenance, and communication with providers and other laboratories. You will also assist the Pathology Department with daily morgue maintenance, record keeping, and other assigned duties.
Responsibilities
- Assist lab staff with clinical, clerical, and inventory management support, including specimen management/processing, ordering and receipt of inventory, instrument maintenance, and communication with providers and other laboratories.
- Support the Pathology Department in daily morgue maintenance, receipt of bodies, record keeping, and handoff to appropriate individuals.
- Maintain adequate supplies of laboratory items, reagents, and materials; communicate supply needs to supervisors and ensure proper receipt and storage of deliveries.
- Perform front-end processing of samples, including labeling, centrifuging, aliquoting, transport, and placement on automated test platforms.
- Handle back-end processing of samples, including preparation for storage, tracking, and disposal according to policy.
- Dispose of regulated medical, biological, chemical, and clean waste properly.
- Clean laboratory work surfaces and assigned equipment in accordance with protocols and document as required.
- Maintain logs for temperature and humidity of assigned equipment, work areas, and eye wash stations.
- Review routine and stat pending lists; retrieve missed tests/specimens.
- Answer phone calls and assist callers with inquiries (e.g., specimen requirements, test availability, turnaround time).
- Access automated test platforms to assess the status of test samples.
- Assist with shipping blood and body fluids to other sites.
- Manage inventory of blood products, including receiving, stocking, and monitoring expiration dates.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- High School Diploma with 12 college credits in biology or chemistry.
- Laboratory experience, including handling open containers of blood and body fluids (accessioning/intake not included).
- Knowledge of computer applications, especially Excel and Word.
- Excellent communication skills.
Qualifications
Preferred: 1+ years of experience in a laboratory setting as a laboratory assistant.
Pay
The salary range for this role is $43,865.64 annually. Actual salaries depend on factors such as experience, specialty, education, and hospital need. This range does not include bonuses, incentive pay, differential pay, or other forms of compensation or benefits.
