About the role

As the department's primary support system, the Laboratory Assistant procures blood samples from patients, preserves specimen integrity, and ensures proper transporting, processing, and preparation of all samples. This role also includes clerical functions such as answering telephone inquiries, disseminating laboratory reports, and communicating with referral laboratories.

Responsibilities

  • Obtains blood sample specimens by venipuncture or capillary methods in response to clinician requests, with appropriate consideration for patient age.
  • Receives and screens specimens for acceptability based on established guidelines.
  • Delivers blood products to Surgery and transports surgical specimens to appropriate laboratory sections.
  • Processes, distributes, or packages all received specimens (except Anatomic Pathology samples).
  • Handles inquiries for lab results, specimen status, and general department information.
  • Communicates and interacts effectively and professionally with patients, co-workers, and guests, considering patient age.
  • Adheres to established Hospital and Departmental policies and procedures.
  • Performs additional clinical and clerical duties to meet department needs.
  • Maintains professional growth and development and actively participates in the Department’s Quality Improvement program.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Graduate from an accredited Phlebotomy Program.
  • 1 year of experience in Phlebotomy, preferably in an acute care facility setting.
  • Computer skills in Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Excellent analytical and organizational skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) – CA DPH certification.
  • Fire Life Safety Training (LA City) – must obtain within 30 days of hire if not already certified.

Pay

The hourly rate range for this position is $23.92 - $40.66. When extending an offer, the University of Southern California considers factors such as scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate’s work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, federal/state/local laws, contractual stipulations, grant funding, and external market considerations.
