Laboratory Assistant

Location: Enumclaw | Hours: 7:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.

Responsibilities

• Perform phlebotomy professionally, competently and with compassion for the patient.
• Maintain a safe and clean environment for all staff members and patients, including collecting and disposing of specimens and other contaminated material in accordance with established policies and procedures and with adherence to infection control standards, body fluid precautions, and protective equipment when necessary.
• Ensure that requisitions are completed properly, including patient demographic, diagnosis, insurance, and physician information. Diagnostic information must be in a narrative or ICD-9 code format and legible.
• Review National Coverage Decisions (NCD) and Local Medical Review Policies (LMRP) for Medicare patients to determine if an Advance Beneficiary Notice (ABN) is required and complete the form with the patient if needed.
• Complete the Medicare Secondary Form (MSP) when necessary.
• Accurately collect all specimens necessary to fulfill lab orders.
• Provide accurate communication to clients and their staff regarding the proper ordering of lab tests.
• Keep the draw station clean and adequately stocked with supplies daily.
• Report job performance issues, concerns, and schedule updates to your supervisor or lead daily.
• If located within a physician’s office, your sole responsibility is to collect specimens for UWL client laboratories; no work for the physician or their practice is permitted.
• Perform courier duties, deliver supplies, or obtain additional information as needed.
• Contact Medicare patients to fulfill compliance requirements regarding MSP forms.
• Perform any other reasonable tasks assigned by the Operations Supervisor.

Requirements

• Phlebotomy Certificate and license (if applicable).
• Ability to proficiently perform phlebotomy on patients of all ages.

• Knowledge of medical terminology.

Physical Requirements

• Continuous sitting (up to 6 hours/day).
• Continuous walking (up to 6 hours/day).
• Intermittent bending, squatting, and climbing.
• Simple grasping, pushing, and pulling with both hands.
• Fine manipulation with both hands, including repetitive movement.
• Frequent lifting of 10 lbs. or less; occasional lifting of 11 to 35 lbs.
