About the Role

The Laboratory Assistant is responsible for assisting staff with answering telephone calls, daily maintenance, miscellaneous administrative duties, data entry, and filing.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure proper accessioning and labeling of all tissue samples.
  • Process paperwork associated with accessioning and reporting.
  • Prepare reagents for tissue processing and routine slide staining, under direct supervision.
  • Perform routine H&E staining either manually or automated.
  • Distribute slides to pathologists.
  • File blocks, slides, and paperwork.
  • Discard specimen containers.
  • Perform specimen pickup(s) as needed.
  • Perform cover slipping of stained slides either manually or automated.
  • Perform routine maintenance and cleaning of equipment.
  • Handle all assigned clerical duties associated with the Pathology laboratory.
  • Ensure all corporate safety, quality control, and quality assurance standards are met.
  • Ensure compliance with all local, federal, CLIA, and CAP regulations.
  • Maintain a clean and well-organized work area.
  • Other duties, as assigned.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required; Associate of Science preferred.
  • One (1) year of experience in a laboratory setting preferred.

Physical Requirements

  • Frequently required to stand, walk, and sit for extended periods.
  • Use of hands to finger, handle, feel objects, tools, or controls.
  • Reach with hands and arms.
  • Occasionally climb stairs, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
  • Constantly talk, hear, and smell.
  • Frequently lift 10 pounds and occasionally lift or move 25 to 50 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Equipment Operated

  • Standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, and fax machines.
  • Laboratory equipment used daily.

Work Environment

This job operates in professional laboratory environments with frequent exposure to:

  • Toxic/caustic chemicals.
  • Moving/mechanical parts.
  • Sharp objects.
  • Blood or body fluids.
  • Communicable diseases.
  • Computer monitors.
  • Repetitive motions.

Local travel in the region may be required to another location as needed.
