About the role
This role helps the Histology department ensure quality control, timely processing of specimens, and organizing/communicating the proper workflow.
Responsibilities
- Calculate case volumes on Specimen Worksheet.
- Separate and organize all requisitions.
- Communicate with histology technicians and pathologists about any delays or rushes.
- Sign off on, scan, and organize all accounted for cell block slides.
- Open special request cases into NovoPath and organize.
- Review log sheet to note any special details.
- Fill out the Deepers and Special Requests lists.
- Sign out cases using the log sheet.
- Make copies of the log sheet, the Deepers, and the Special Requests lists; send originals with couriers and retain copies for PCL records.
- Manage differences between client work, schedules, and preferences.
- Replace reagents in the stainer.
- Fill out inventory sheets and Quality Control Checklist.
- Open incoming packages from branches/clients, unpack, and receive specimens.
- Perform Quality Assurance for specimens and patient information with a high degree of accuracy and in accordance with established protocols.
- Accurately enter patient demographic and test information into the Laboratory Information Management System (Nova Path).
- Assign computer-generated identification numbers for specimen tracking.
- Accurately identify and label specimens.
- Troubleshoot problems when necessary.
- Process and accession laboratory specimens for testing, ensuring delivery to the proper department.
- Complete required annual training.
- Assist in other departments/positions as deemed necessary.
- Other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- High school diploma.
- Strong attention to detail and number recognition skills.
- Excellent organizational skills.
- Ability to multi-task and work within tight time constraints.
- Effective interpersonal skills.
- Computer experience with keyboard proficiency.
- Strong knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel applications.
- Ability to maintain accurate and legible documentation.
- Familiarity with medical terminology.
- Knowledge of specified laboratory solutions, materials, and/or media.
- Ability to understand and follow specific instructions and procedures.
- Prior work experience in laboratory support or health-related experience preferred.
