Labor Service
Labor Service positions with the City of Waltham include Laborer, Gardner, Highway Maintenance, Motor Equipment Operator (MEO), Heavy Motor Equipment Operator (HMEO), and Special Motor Equipment Operator (SMEO). HMEO & SMEO positions require a valid Commercial Driver’s License.
About the Registration Process
Under MGL. Ch. 31 Sect. 28, applicants for labor service are registered and placed on the eligible list in the order their applications are filed. Veterans and surviving spouses or parents of veterans killed in action or who died from a service-connected disability (who have not remarried) are placed at the top of the eligible list. Registrations are valid for five years and may be renewed once for an additional five years by notifying the Human Resources Department in writing six months prior to and after the anniversary date of the registration.
Requirements
- Meet the minimum qualifications of the position
- Hold a valid Massachusetts Driver’s License (CDL required for HMEO & SMEO positions)
- Possess a Hoisting license if applying for Special Motor Equipment Operator
- Complete a City of Waltham application
- Provide three written letters of recommendation
- Pass a CORI background check
- Pass a pre-employment physical, lift test, and drug test
- Pass an oral interview panel
Additional Information
Eligible candidates will be notified of future openings based on seniority. You must respond to all notifications; failure to respond to three notifications or returned mail will result in removal from the list. Update your email or address with the Human Resources Department as needed.
