Reporting to the Labor Relations Executive, this long-term contract position is eligible for benefits and requires a minimum of four days per week in-office in Jersey City, NJ. The selected candidate may be required to travel to other Port Authority facilities as needed.
Responsibilities
- Keep a docket of disciplinary matters and grievances, including investigation, on-site visits, drafting charges or responses, attending hearings, and resolution in accordance with contractual timeframes and departmental procedures.
- Assist colleagues in disciplinary matters and grievances as assigned.
- Prepare, format, and serve disciplinary charges as assigned.
- Coordinate and schedule all disciplines and medical removal matters, including dates for hearings and hearing locations.
- Obtain dates from and coordinate schedules with arbitrators, impartial hearing officers, and court reporters.
- Process and track payment of all related invoices (e.g., grievances, panel matters, disciplines, and investigations).
- Generate monthly reports.
- Maintain an electronic catalogue of disciplinary decisions by topic, summarizing and cataloging those and other discipline decisions.
- Assist in maintaining and updating tracking data related to active disciplinary matters.
- Provide guidance to managers and supervisors on disciplinary and grievance procedures when assigned.
- Perform other duties and/or special projects as assigned.
Requirements
- Minimum of three years of progressively responsible experience in human resources, employee relations, and/or labor relations matters or a minimum of 60 college credits from an accredited college or university in Business Administration, Labor Relations, or other related field.
- Demonstrated experience drafting, editing, and reviewing specialized and technical documentation.
- Superior written and oral communication skills, with the ability to confidently engage in-person, on virtual calls, and phone calls.
Qualifications
Desired qualifications:
- Proficiency in LawManager, PLI, LiveLink, and Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Access, Excel, Word, and PowerPoint).
- In-depth knowledge of Port Authority organizational structure, policies, and procedures.
- Understanding of employment law fundamentals, labor relations practices, and human resources processes, including Port Authority Labor Relations Instruction and Port Authority Memoranda of Agreement.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills, with experience presenting to diverse audiences and fostering working relationships with stakeholders, executives, attorneys, judges, and external agencies.
- Flexibility and resourcefulness in analyzing and resolving legal matters, with the ability to exercise prudent judgment and discretion in handling confidential and sensitive information.
- Strong organizational, project management, and time-management skills, with the ability to self-motivate, prioritize, and handle multiple assignments under tight deadlines.
- Excellent analytical skills and proficiency in persuading, influencing, and negotiating with individuals at various levels.
- Experience reading, interpreting, and/or drafting contracts, policies, or similar documents, with the ability to synthesize solutions from diverse information sources.
