Agency Attorney Interne
The New York City Department of Correction (DOC) seeks to recruit one (1) Agency Attorney Interne to work in the Office of Labor Relations under close supervision of Agency Attorneys, and the Executive Director. Agency Attorney Internes will receive training and practical experience in all tasks performed in the Labor Relations Division. They will assist the Agency Attorneys in performing such tasks, including, but not limited to:
- Evaluating disciplinary matters and grievances for legal sufficiency.
- Drafting formal Departmental charges against DOC uniform employees.
- Preparing and reviewing (including redacting) documents and media for discovery, as well as in response to requests for information.
- Conducting interviews with potential witnesses.
- Reviewing audio and video tape evidence and making comparative reviews.
- Representing the Department during informal settlement, negotiations with opposing counsel.
- Conducting informal conferences concerning disciplinary cases at the Office of Administrative Trials and Hearings (O.A.T.H.).
- Recommending appropriate dispositions on disciplinary matters.
- Preparing memoranda detailing evidence and recommended negotiated plea agreements/stipulations of settlements/drafting stipulations.
- Preparing disciplinary matters that are not settled for formal hearings at O.A.T.H and OLR.
- Conducting/Assisting with conducting of formal hearings on disciplinary charges at O.A.T.H, and grievances (including disciplinary) at OLR and at arbitration concerning employees of the Department.
- Researching legal issues and writing memoranda (including assistance with determinations) for various labor relations topics, including collective bargaining, human resources, and workplace violence.
- Tracking disciplinary cases and grievances and updating summaries of decisions for reference.
- Perform related duties as assigned, including special projects, attendance at meetings and providing support for staff.
Preferred Skills
- Some prior exposure to litigation, either through an internship program, or prior employment experience.
- Excellent writing, communication, interpersonal, analytical research, problem-solving, multi-tasking and organizational skills.
Minimum Qualifications
- Graduation from an accredited United States law school as defined in the Rules of the New York Court of Appeals (Sections 520.3 or 520.5) or admission to the New York State Bar.
