About the role
This position involves evening work at the Sutter Joint Venture Cancer Center, located at 3375 Hillview Ave, Palo Alto, CA. It is a full-time position under the supervision of supervisors or senior technical support staff.
Responsibilities
- Accesses patient information into Laboratory Information Systems (LIS).
- Checks all requests for proper and accurate patient information and consults with supervisor or technologist if needed.
- Notifies physicians, nursing units, clinics, etc., if sample received is inappropriate or compromised.
- Prepares specimens and maintains pure viable stock cultures as directed.
- Adheres to safety and health regulations and policies.
- Assists in routine and scheduled preventive maintenance for automated and semi-automated instruments.
- Inventories and orders supplies, verifying deliveries and restocking as needed.
- Maintains logs and records for all laboratory transactions and information.
- Maintains temperature controls for incubators, heating blocks, water baths, freezers, and refrigeration units.
- Organizes, catalogs, and stores patient specimen samples.
- Participates in pre-clinical test development according to established protocols.
- Performs clerical tasks such as word processing, entering information into the database, handling calls and inquiries, and other support functions.
- Processes specimens including DNA and RNA extraction, determines suitability for analysis, and performs pre-analytical processing.
- Processes specimens for outside reference laboratories and monitors their progress, transcribing results into laboratory information systems.
- Receives and processes all specimens/samples following proper laboratory procedures.
- Distributes patient samples to appropriate areas of the laboratory or routes them to other hospital departments as required.
- Assists pathologists with frozen section preparation (if applicable).
Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
- One (1) year of progressively responsible and directly related work experience.
Skills
- Effective communication skills, both oral and written.
- Ability to foster effective working relationships and build consensus.
- Ability to learn new procedures and adapt to technological changes in the laboratory.
- Ability to organize, prioritize, multi-task, and adapt to changing priorities.
- Basic mathematical skills.
- Knowledge of computer systems and software used in functional area.

Pay
The base pay scale for this role generally starts at $42.96 - $48.38 per hour, with the final salary determined based on a variety of factors including internal equity, experience, education, specialty, and training.
