Lab Phlebotomist PRN

About the role

As a Lab Assistant / Phlebotomist PRN, you will perform non-technical functions under supervision, including specimen collection, processing, submission to referral laboratories, and patient registration. You will support department goals for service, quality, regulatory compliance, financial performance, patient satisfaction, and integration of intra- and inter-departmental activities.

Responsibilities

• Demonstrate a thorough understanding of specimen collection and testing requirements, including specimen rejection criteria
• Perform venipunctures, finger sticks, and heel sticks on pediatric, neonatal, adult, and geriatric patients
• Utilize supplies appropriately and follow established procedures for patient identification and specimen collection
• Complete specimen collection documentation and educate patients/families on procedures
• Use the computer information system for job functions and perform clerical duties (e.g., faxing, phones, pneumatic tube system)
• Prioritize tasks and plan for completion of duties
• Review Outstanding Specimen Report (OSR) and address pending specimen collections/accessioning issues
• Receive, register, and order entry laboratory specimens accurately and in a timely manner
• Label specimens and aliquots according to established protocols
• Centrifuge and aliquot specimens based on type and tests ordered; prepare specimens for courier pick-up
• Discard laboratory specimens according to established schedules
• Perform preventive maintenance and quality assurance procedures as assigned
• Collect chain-of-custody drug collections according to policy
• Maintain records of specimen problems and take corrective action to ensure testing validity and accuracy
• Clean areas affected by emergency specimen spills
• Assess and troubleshoot specimen requirements for referral testing
• Process, sort, and prepare specimens for submission to referral laboratories
• Monitor and review referred testing status to ensure timely results for physicians
• Communicate and troubleshoot problem specimens promptly

Requirements

• Ability to work in a team environment and promote a cooperative, harmonious workplace
• Excellent customer service practices in all interactions
• Effective communication with personnel to exchange accurate and timely technical information
• 2+ years’ experience performing registration, clerical duties, and specimen processing
• Adherence to safety policies and procedures
• Protect sensitive and confidential information by participating in the Privacy & Security Awareness program
• Compliance with company policies and standards regarding security
• Complete assigned courses and training annually
• Availability to work during disasters

Qualifications

• Vocational/Technical Degree preferred
• 1-3 years in a clinical laboratory setting preferred
• Phlebotomy, Medical Assistant, Paramedic, or EMT certification preferred
