Lab Phlebotomist

About the role

The Laboratory Phlebotomist is responsible for the collection of patient specimens for laboratory testing. This includes following proper guidelines for safe handling of blood, body fluids, hazardous chemicals, recording lab testing, quality control and assurance, and maintaining appropriate inventory levels of reagents and supplies.

Responsibilities

• Perform clean venipunctures and capillary collections.
• Follow proper guidelines for safe handling of blood, body fluids, and hazardous chemicals.
• Demonstrate knowledge of laboratory procedures and quality assurance activities; document breaches of quality as they occur.
• Maintain appropriate inventory levels of reagents and supplies.
• Identify problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results; correct issues or notify Clinic Operations Manager and Clinical Laboratory Operations Manager.
• Document all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from laboratory’s established performance specifications.
• Document in charts for “lab only” visits.
• Understand and use the Laboratory Information System (LIS), including ordering tests, rejecting tests, locating, and printing result reports.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Phlebotomist/Medical Assistant with 2 years of clinical lab experience preferred.
• One year of phlebotomy experience preferred.
• Phlebotomy certification is preferred but not required.
• High school diploma required.

Skills

• Excellent phlebotomy skills.
• Experience in an outpatient facility or physician office.
