About the role

The Laboratory Monitor provides supervision and support to students utilizing the laboratory outside of scheduled, structured class time. The position promotes a safe, organized, and productive learning environment while reinforcing skills taught by program faculty.

Responsibilities

  • Support students as they practice instrumentation handling and identification, case preparation, sterile technique, aseptic principles, and other laboratory skills necessary for successful progression through the program and preparation for clinical experiences.
  • Monitor students during laboratory practice and ensure compliance with established laboratory policies, procedures, and safety requirements.
  • Reinforce proper sterile and aseptic techniques and promote safe laboratory practices.
  • Maintain a professional and orderly laboratory environment.
  • Identify and report safety concerns, equipment issues, or policy violations to the appropriate faculty or program administrator.
  • Provide students with opportunities to reinforce skills introduced during scheduled classroom and laboratory instruction.
  • Assist students with appropriate instrumentation handling, equipment use, and case set-up preparation.
  • Answer routine questions and provide guidance within the scope of the position while referring instructional or content-related questions to program faculty when appropriate.
  • Encourage students to practice and develop confidence in essential surgical technology skills.
  • Provide additional supervised practice opportunities that allow students to strengthen technical skills and develop confidence prior to clinical rotations.

Requirements

  • Successful completion of an accredited Surgical Technology program and appropriate educational credential in Surgical Technology.
  • Previous experience working in an operating room or surgical healthcare environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior teaching or preceptor experience.
  • Successful completion of an accredited Surgical Technology program and appropriate educational credential in Surgical Technology.
  • Previous experience working with surgical technology students or providing laboratory support is preferred.
