Responsibilities

A typical day for the Molecular Technologist includes:

  • RNA extraction utilizing a combination of manual and automated methods
  • RT-PCR performed through manual pipetting techniques
  • Sample loading onto array chips for final result determination
  • Equipment setup and maintenance associated with all testing processes
  • Reagent preparation and specimen management
  • Assisting with inventory and quality management activities
  • Specimen management and preparation
  • In-house control creation
  • Reagent quality control testing
  • Quality control checks and documentation associated with high-complexity clinical laboratory testing

This role spends the majority of time performing hands-on laboratory procedures while ensuring accuracy, compliance, and adherence to established quality standards.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemistry, Biology, Clinical Laboratory Science, or Medical Technology from an accredited institution, plus 1-2 years of experience in a molecular biology testing environment, clinical or equivalent laboratory environment.
  • And/or completion of military training for laboratory technicians as high complexity testing personnel, including:
    • Completion of a 50-week U.S. military medical laboratory training program
    • Minimum coursework and training requirements:
      • 24 semester hours of medical laboratory technology courses or 24 semester hours of science courses, including 6 semester hours of both Chemistry & Biology, and an additional 12 semester hours in any combination of Chemistry, Biology, or Medical Laboratory Science
    • Completion of a clinical laboratory training program OR at least 3 months of documented laboratory training in each specialty area where the individual will perform high-complexity testing
  • Technical proficiency, scientific creativity, successful collaboration with others, and independent thought

Schedule

Monday through Friday, 8:30am to 5pm. The role may require flexibility to meet operational needs, working from the Pittsburgh, PA laboratory location.
