Michigan State University’s Walker lab in the Plant Research Laboratory is seeking a full-time Research Assistant to support a cutting-edge facility focused on photosynthesis research in plants. The role combines molecular, biochemical, and gas-exchange-based approaches.
Responsibilities
- Perform routine laboratory tasks such as media preparation and molecular work.
- Conduct biochemical analysis, light field work, and other primary research duties.
- Manage lab inventory and track supplies.
- Develop and maintain a Wiki outlining standard lab protocols and operations.
- Ensure proper waste management, chemical labeling, and storage compliance.
- Serve as a lab contact to orient students and researchers on lab and department resources.
- Assist in lab and field sampling, biochemical/molecular analysis, and troubleshooting gas exchange instrumentation.
- Maintain stocks of autoclaved reagents and laboratory supplies.
- Review primary literature to support essay development and publication preparation.
Requirements
- Knowledge equivalent to a four-year degree in Biology, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, or a related science field.
- Three to five years of progressively responsible experience in research projects, lab operations, equipment maintenance, and specialized analytical techniques.
- Willingness to learn lab safety compliance and procedures.
- Experience with enzymology, protein expression/purification, lab compliance/safety, or instrumentation troubleshooting is desired.
Schedule
Standard 8 AM–5 PM, Monday through Friday.
Pay
This is an end-dated, full-time position funded for one year from the start date, with possible extension contingent upon funding renewal.
