About the role

Labcorp is seeking a Lab Director to join our team at Tufts Medical Center in Boston, MA. This position requires flexibility in scheduling.

Responsibilities

• Lead and direct hospital laboratory operations to ensure quality results, proper staffing, and financial vitality while fostering a collaborative team environment.
• Ensure adherence and implementation of hospital and laboratory policies and procedures for sites within the designated market.
• Work closely with hospital administration and lab leadership to maintain strategic and financial objectives, explaining variances across laboratories.
• Ensure laboratories meet established performance metrics, identifying root causes and implementing process improvements as needed.
• Partner with Quality teams to oversee the implementation of new test methods and procedures at hospitals within the market.
• Maintain strong customer-focused relationships, resolving operational issues proactively and effectively.
• Collaborate with Medical Directors, Professional Support Leaders, and Health System Leadership to meet provider and patient expectations.
• Resolve client inquiries and operational issues promptly by consulting with relevant stakeholders (e.g., Medical Director, Technical Director, QA, laboratory managers).
• Maintain compliance with corporate, state, and federal regulatory requirements (CAP, CLIA, State, ISO, etc.) related to personnel safety, testing quality, and professional conduct.
• Serve as the laboratory liaison and partner for other health system departments, promoting communication and teamwork.
• Ensure effective communication with leadership, clients, corporate operations, and staff across departments.
• Lead and develop a high-performing team of managers, supervisors, and lead technologists through coaching, training, and performance management.
• Foster a culture of high employee engagement, collaboration, continuous learning, and innovation within the laboratory team.
• Proactively address workplace climate to maintain a positive culture, strengthen retention, and enhance team effectiveness.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree (required).
• 5+ years of leadership experience in a health system or medical center.
• Demonstrated ability to build trust, inspire engagement, and cultivate a healthy workplace culture.
• Proficiency in laboratory knowledge and clinical laboratory management.
• Prior experience in a high-volume, large hospital environment.
• Familiarity with new laboratory instrumentation and equipment automation.
• Strong working knowledge of supply chain operations and expense control.
• Customer-focused communication skills when working with client leadership.
• Experience managing multiple locations (highly preferred).
• Strong working knowledge of CLIA, CAP, and relevant state regulations.
• Understanding of laboratory operations, policies, and procedures.
• Proven success in training and developing both technical and non-technical employees.
• Strong leadership capabilities, including emotional intelligence, excellent listening, verbal and written communication, and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to manage performance, provide developmental coaching/feedback, and mentor others.
• Problem-solving skills with the ability to provide solutions under minimal supervision.
• Ability to balance business needs with employee needs.
• Proficiency with Laboratory Information Systems and Microsoft Office.
• Strong communication skills (written and verbal) and high attention to detail with organizational skills.

Preferred Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in a Chemical or Biological science, Clinical Laboratory Science, or Medical Technology.
• 10+ years of clinical laboratory testing experience.
• 2+ years of experience working in an academic institution.
• ASCP or AMT certification.

Pay

Pay Range: $170,000 - $210,000 + annual bonus. All job offers are based on a candidate’s skills, prior relevant experience, applicable degrees/certifications, and internal equity and market data. The position is eligible for an annual bonus under the Labcorp Bonus Plan, payable based on corporate and/or business segment performance and individual performance modifiers.
