About the role

This position supports the Dallas, TX location. Hours are 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM, Monday through Friday.

Responsibilities

• Collects appropriate specimens from patients as ordered and maintains proper documentation as described by the quality assurance program, including accessioning logs, test report logs, quality control logs, equipment records, and checklists.
• Performs specimen analysis of chemistry, hematology, and immunology specimens as directed.
• Maintains adequate inventory of supplies and ensures viability before use in patient testing.
• Prepares patients as necessary (e.g., taking vital signs) and assists with testing procedures according to procedure guidelines.
• Sends specimens to reference laboratories for testing not performed in-house.
• Processes incoming orders for lab testing and incoming results for charting.
• Charts patient results in a timely manner and updates/files all daily paperwork, lab logs, and maintenance logs.
• Arranges for transfusion of blood products when ordered by a physician.
• Operates designated laboratory equipment effectively, skillfully, and efficiently, including performing daily, weekly, and monthly instrument maintenance.
• Records proper lot numbers of all controls, calibrators, and reagents.
• Identifies troubleshooting procedures and calls technical services as needed.
• Implements and complies with safety and quality assurance standards, including OSHA compliance laws and Universal Precaution procedures.
• Properly disposes of hazardous materials and maintains a clean working environment.
• Performs phlebotomy and sample collection procedures as needed.
• Maintains confidentiality of all information related to patients and medical staff.
• Performs CLIA Waived or Moderately Complexity testing under close supervision.

Requirements

• Level 1: High School diploma or equivalent (entry-level, no experience required).
• Level 2: Minimum three years of laboratory experience (in addition to Level 1 requirements).
• Level Sr: Minimum five years of laboratory experience (in addition to Level 1 and 2 requirements).

Physical Demands

The physical demands of this job include full range of body motion, manual and finger dexterity, and eye-hand coordination for operating complex laboratory equipment. Requires sitting/standing for extensive periods, using hands to handle or feel, and reaching or carrying with arms. Occasionally lifts and carries items weighing up to 40 lbs. Requires corrected vision, color perception, and hearing within normal range, as well as legible handwriting.

Work Environment

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to direct contact with patients, potential exposure to blood/body fluids, chemotherapeutic agents, or transmittable infections. Additional exposures include corrosive chemicals, infectious agents, handling glassware, needles, and open flames.
