About the role

The role of Lab Assistant at MercyOne involves supporting various laboratory departments by assisting technical staff in specimen collection, processing, analysis, and reporting. This includes performing venipunctures, finger sticks, and heel sticks, ensuring proper specimen collection, managing add-on orders, and resolving problematic specimens.

Responsibilities

  • Supports technical staff in specimen collection, processing, analysis, and reporting.
  • Affixes specimens and requisitions from internal and external customers, and manages add-on orders and pending lists.
  • Registers and logs specimens in the Laboratory Information System (LIS), evaluates specimen adequacy and acceptability, and scans required documentation into the patient record.
  • Performs specimen processing such as identification, aliquoting, plate streaking, slide preparation, special handling, and documentation.
  • Collaborates with laboratory staff and clients to resolve problematic patient specimens and test orders.
  • Follows safety, infection control, and chemical-handling procedures and promotes accurate testing, timely turnaround, and productivity.
  • Supports efficient workflow practices by restocking supplies, participating in peer teaching, and engaging in department or hospital committees and projects.

Requirements

  • Laboratory experience and knowledge of medical terminology preferred.
  • Strong computer skills with the ability to learn new systems and tools quickly.
  • Comfortable operating in a collaborative, shared leadership environment.
  • Personal presence characterized by honesty, integrity, and caring, inspiring and motivating others.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required.

M-F 4-10 hr shifts; 6:30 am - 5:00 pm and 7:00 am - 5:30 pm rotating.
