This is a per-diem position that covers vacation and illness, with potential shifts from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM.

About the role

The Lab Phlebotomist - Hospital performs venipuncture and skin puncture in the hospital setting, demonstrating excellent communication and patient care skills. The Hospital Phlebotomy team services patients at Carle Foundation Hospital, ranging from newborn to geriatric, across the Emergency Department, inpatient, and outpatient areas. The team works closely with healthcare professionals to collect blood specimens for diagnostic testing, serving approximately 400 patients every 24 hours. Hospital Phlebotomists work every other weekend, 3-4 holidays per year, and cover 1-2 call shifts each week.

Responsibilities

  • Performs routine and complex blood drawing procedures, including venipuncture, finger and heel sticks, and blood cultures.
  • Verifies patient identification and specimen labeling to ensure quality.
  • Maintains appropriate response times for stat and timed orders (STAT tests within 15 minutes, TIMED tests within a 30-minute window).
  • Serves as part of trauma and code response teams, collecting initial blood specimens for all trauma patients.
  • Uses two patient identifiers (Name/Date of Birth or Name/Medical Record Number) for all collections.
  • Performs venipunctures using vacutainer needles, hypodermic needles with syringes, or butterfly needle systems.
  • Handles complex blood draws, including specialized kits for commercial labs or research, and blood cultures requiring Chloroprep skin decontamination.
  • Coordinates with nurses for single or multiple-lumen port collections.
  • Successfully participates in accreditation, proficiency testing, and annual performance competencies.
  • Completes re-education or re-training as needed for proficiency and competency testing.
  • Follows and maintains familiarity with laboratory and organizational policies and procedures.
  • Completes continuing education as required by lab policy and to maintain certification, if applicable.
  • Communicates accurately, timely, and professionally with internal and external customers.
  • Demonstrates the ability to work in a fast-paced environment.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED (Required).

Pay

The compensation range for this position is $19.25 per hour to $31.19 per hour. The actual compensation offered will depend on factors such as experience, qualifications, location, training, licenses, shifts worked, and compensation model.
