Lab Assistant - Histology (BroMenn)
About the role
The Hospital Phlebotomy team services patients at Carle Foundation Hospital, covering newborn to geriatric patients in the Emergency Department and all inpatient and outpatient areas. The team works closely with various healthcare professionals to collect blood specimens for diagnostic testing, serving approximately 400 patients every 24 hours.
Hospital Phlebotomists work every other weekend, 3-4 holidays per year, and cover 1-2 call shifts each week.
Responsibilities
- Perform routine and complex blood drawing procedures, including venipuncture, finger and heel sticks, and blood cultures.
- Verify patient identification and specimen labeling to ensure quality.
- Maintain appropriate response times for stat and timed orders (STAT tests within 15 minutes, TIMED tests within a 30-minute window).
- Serve as part of the trauma and code response teams, collecting initial blood specimens for all trauma patients.
- Use two identifiers (Name/Date of Birth or Name/Medical Record Number) for patient and specimen identification.
- Perform venipunctures using vacutainer needles, hypodermic needles with syringes, or butterfly needle systems.
- Conduct complex blood draws, including specialized collection kits for commercial laboratories and research.
- Collect blood cultures using Chloroprep skin decontamination and coordinate with nurses for port collections.
- Successfully participate in accreditation, proficiency testing, and annual performance competencies.
- Engage in re-education or re-training as needed to complete proficiency and competency testing.
- Follow and maintain familiarity with laboratory and organizational policies and procedures.
- Complete continuing education as required by lab policy and to maintain certification, if applicable.
- Communicate accurately, timely, and professionally with internal and external customers.
- Demonstrate the ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or GED (Required).
Pay
The compensation range for this position is $19.25 per hour – $31.19 per hour. The actual compensation offered will depend on factors such as experience, qualifications, location, training, licenses, shifts worked, and compensation model.
