Lab assistant - Beaumont, Tx

About the role

This is a full-time position supporting the Beaumont, Texas location. The schedule is Monday through Friday, 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM, with no weekends, call, or major holidays. The position may be classified as Level I, II, or Senior based on candidate experience.

Responsibilities

• Collects appropriate specimens from patients as ordered and maintains proper documentation per quality assurance programs, including accessioning logs, test report logs, quality control logs, equipment records, and checklists.
• Performs specimen analysis of chemistry, hematology, and immunology specimens as directed.
• Maintains adequate inventory of supplies and ensures viability before use in patient testing.
• Prepares patients as necessary (e.g., taking vital signs) and assists with testing procedures according to guidelines.
• Sends specimens to reference laboratories for tests not performed in-house.
• Processes incoming orders for lab testing and both in-house and incoming results for charting.
• Charts patient results in a timely manner and updates/files daily paperwork, lab logs, and maintenance logs.
• Arranges for transfusion of blood products when ordered by a physician.
• Operates designated laboratory equipment effectively, skillfully, and efficiently, and maintains equipment and work areas.
• Performs testing under CLIA guidelines for personnel and conducts daily, weekly, and monthly instrument maintenance.
• Records proper lot numbers for controls, calibrators, and reagents, and identifies troubleshooting procedures.
• Implements and complies with safety and quality assurance standards, regulatory agency standards, OSHA compliance laws, and Universal Precaution procedures.
• Properly disposes of hazardous materials and maintains a clean working environment.
• Performs phlebotomy and sample collection procedures as needed.
• Maintains confidentiality of all patient and medical staff information.
• Performs CLIA Waived or Moderately Complexity testing under close supervision.

Requirements

• Level I: High School diploma or equivalent; entry-level with no experience required.
• Level II: Minimum three (3) years of laboratory experience (in addition to Level I requirements).
• Level Senior: Minimum five (5) years of laboratory experience (in addition to Level I and II requirements).

Physical Demands

• Full range of body motion, including manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination for operating complex laboratory equipment.
• Requires sitting or standing for extensive periods, using hands to handle or feel, and reaching or carrying with arms.
• Occasionally lifts and carries items weighing up to 40 lbs.
• Requires corrected vision, color perception, and hearing within normal range, as well as legible handwriting.

Work Environment

• Regular exposure to direct patient contact with potential for exposure to blood/body fluids, chemotherapeutic agents, or transmittable infections.
• Direct contact with corrosive chemicals, infectious agents, and handling of glassware, needles, and open flames.
