Responsibilities

The Laboratory Assistant will follow the guidelines set by CLIA and the CA Business and Professions Codes (bpc: 1212, 1269). Unlicensed laboratory personnel (“aides”) may not read, record, result, verify, or interpret any laboratory test; perform any test involving quantitative measurement of specimens or reagents; perform mathematical calculations for test results; perform instrument calibration; or review quality control results. Unlicensed personnel require direct and constant supervision by a CLS or other licensed person during the analytical testing phase.

• Performs computer entry, filing, telephone communication, and other clerical duties.
• Demonstrates good telephone etiquette and greets patients and visitors politely.
• Possesses strong communication skills and knowledge of laboratory test terminology.
• Demonstrates proficiency in phlebotomy and specimen collection for all age groups (newborn to geriatric).
• Processes specimens in pathology, microbiology, immunology, hematology, coagulation, urinalysis, chemistry, and blood bank.
• Processes specimens for reference laboratories.
• Stocks and orders routine supplies.
• Maintains cleanliness of storage areas, trays, centrifuges, and collection areas.
• Processes or places specimens on laboratory instruments per established policies.
• With documented training, may perform instrument preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, quality control procedures, primary culture inoculations, slide staining, and subculturing from liquid media.
• Performs additional tasks as assigned (e.g., monitoring, mailing, faxing, answering phones, interdepartmental deliveries).
• Assists in Pathology with training and evaluations.
• Serves as a runner when needed.

Requirements

• High School Diploma or equivalent required.
• Minimum 1-year clinical laboratory experience performing similar job functions preferred.
• State Certified as CPT I or CPT II if required by state regulations.
• Current BCLS (AHA) certificate upon hire and maintenance preferred.
