Lab Assistant

About the role

The primary responsibility of the Lab Assistant is to collect a variety of specimen types from pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients. Performs laboratory duties including the use of the Lab Information System (LIS) to place and receive orders, retrieve patient test results, and other information. Prepares requisitions, maintains a filing system, prints and delivers reports, provides data collection support, processes and distributes laboratory samples, and handles phone communications. Assists in basic laboratory testing under the direction of a Medical Technologist and may perform CLIA waived testing procedures in Meditech as assigned. Additional duties include greeting patients, registering patients using EPIC, answering and processing phone calls, and supporting patient satisfaction programs. May perform semi-technical duties such as loading samples on instruments, taking inventory, ordering supplies, and serving on hospital committees or task forces.

Responsibilities

• Collect venous and capillary blood samples, NP swabs for Flu, Covid, or throat/nares samples from pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients.
• Provide proper instruction for urine collection to patients.
• Perform clerical and interpersonal aspects of clinical lab services.
• Follow instructions pertaining to laboratory test procedures.
• Identify, match, and distinguish colors accurately.
• Ensure specimens are collected from the correct patient and recorded on the correct date of service.
• Support hospital mission, vision, values, policies, and procedures.
• Participate in required education for DNV programs.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Good manual dexterity skills.
• Able to read, write, and communicate effectively.
• Able to lift 50 lbs. maximum with frequent lifting and/or carrying objects weighing up to 25 lbs.
• Detail-oriented to ensure accuracy in patient identification and specimen collection.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent (required).
• National Phlebotomy Certification (required).
• Current BLS Certification or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire (preferred).
• Minimum of 6 months of phlebotomy experience in a working laboratory (required).

Skills

• Proficiency in using Lab Information System (LIS) and EPIC for patient registration and order management.
• Ability to perform basic laboratory testing and CLIA waived testing procedures.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills for patient interaction.
• Ability to work in a fast-paced, high-pressure healthcare environment.

Physical Requirements

• Sufficient auditory ability to detect and respond to sounds, including patient alarms and verbal communication.
• Visual acuity for observing patient conditions, reading documentation, and distinguishing colors.
• Tactile perception for assessing physical characteristics such as temperature, size, shape, or texture.
• Motor coordination for reaching, grasping, handling, and performing fine motor tasks.
• Ability to stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl occasionally.
• Continuous walking and standing throughout the shift.
• Ability to lift up to 50 pounds independently and frequently push, pull, carry, or reposition objects or patients weighing up to 25 pounds.
• Occasional lifting or transferring of individuals weighing over 100 pounds with appropriate lifting techniques, mechanical aids, or team assistance.
• Ability to sit for long periods of time.

Working Conditions

• Primarily indoor healthcare environment (hospital, clinic, or long-term care facility).
• Exposure to variable indoor temperatures.
• Frequent exposure to infectious and contagious diseases, hazardous materials, and medical equipment.
• Fast-paced and unpredictable environment with high-pressure or emergency situations.
• Multiple simultaneous demands and varying noise levels due to medical equipment, staff activity, and patient needs.

Pay

Hourly rate: $19.41 - $29.73, plus 15% PD Differential.

Schedule

First shift, per diem position.
