About the role

This position provides an excellent experience for patients when collecting blood and other specimens, both within the hospital and at off-site locations. The role involves registering lab patients, entering orders from various sources (electronic, written, faxed, and verbal), and providing clerical support for lab technical functions. Responsibilities include maintaining the physical space of the drawing area, processing specimens (centrifuging and preparation), and assisting with interdepartmental support activities to improve patient care and flow. The individual may also perform limited waived and moderate complexity tests as authorized by the Lab Medical Director.

Responsibilities

  • Perform expert phlebotomy and provide exceptional customer service.
  • Accurately sort and process all types of body fluids and tissues while maintaining a high degree of accuracy.
  • Perform Point-of-Care (POC) testing.
  • Register lab patients and enter orders from electronic, written, faxed, and verbal sources.
  • Provide clerical support for lab technical functions and maintain the physical space of the drawing area, including washing glassware.
  • Process specimens, including centrifuging and specimen preparation.
  • Assist with interdepartmental support activities to enhance patient care and flow.
  • Travel to off-site locations to collect specimens when necessary, using a personal vehicle if a hospital vehicle is unavailable.
  • Assist in training new staff and perform other duties as assigned.
  • Maintain competency per protocol and attend applicable continuing education.
  • Communicate technical information clearly both in person and by phone.

Requirements

  • Skilled in blood collections with general phlebotomy experience.
  • Previous healthcare experience or understanding of basic medical terminology and keyboarding.
  • Ability to move rapidly between locations within the hospital.
  • High level of accuracy while performing multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Valid Indiana driver’s license and access to a vehicle for specimen collection trips under various climatic conditions.
  • Must be contactable by telephone for backup coverage.
  • Integrity, good judgment, and strong interpersonal skills.
  • Friendly, reassuring personality when dealing with patients.
  • Good physical and emotional well-being.
  • Good typing skills; computer experience is a plus.

Qualifications

  • Phlebotomy certification preferred.
  • CPR certification preferred.

Schedule

Variable working hours starting as early as 4 AM, including weekend and holiday rotation.
