Position Summary
The Kitchen Assistant supports the daily food service operations of a men's shelter by assisting with meal preparation, serving meals, maintaining kitchen cleanliness, and ensuring food safety standards are followed. This position plays an important role in providing nutritious meals in a respectful and welcoming environment for shelter residents.
Duties
- Aid in the preparation and serving of breakfast, lunch, and/or dinner for shelter residents.
- Prepare ingredients by washing, chopping, slicing, and portioning food items.
- Set up serving stations and distribute meals in a courteous and professional manner.
- Wash dishes, utensils, pots, pans, and kitchen equipment.
- Clean and sanitize kitchen work areas, dining areas, refrigerators, freezers, and storage spaces.
- Follow all food safety, sanitation, and health department regulations.
- Receive, organize, label, and properly store food deliveries and donations.
- Maintain inventory levels and notify supervisors when supplies need replenishing.
- Assist with stocking shelves and rotating food items using FIFO (First In, First Out) procedures.
- Remove trash and recycling and maintain cleanliness throughout the facility.
- Work collaboratively with shelter staff, volunteers, and residents while maintaining a positive and respectful environment.
- Perform other related duties as assigned by management.
Qualifications
- A high school diploma or GED is preferred.
- Previous food service, kitchen, or shelter experience is preferred but not required.
- Knowledge of basic food preparation and sanitation practices is required.
- Ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds is essential.
- Strong teamwork, communication, and organizational skills are necessary.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism is required.
- A Food Handler Certification is preferred or willingness to obtain upon hire.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to bend, stoop, reach, and perform repetitive tasks.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced kitchen environment.
