The Preschool serves approximately 100 students in grades Pre-K and Kindergarten. Our Preschool classrooms have 18 students with a lead classroom teacher and a teaching assistant. This position reports to the Preschool Director. Specific Responsibilities Include Setting learning goals and planning developmentally appropriate and engaging lessonsPreparing instructional materialsLeading whole and small group instruction and providing intervention, as neededAssessing student performance and growthMaintaining communication with familiesCarrying out required supervisory dutiesPerforming other duties as requested by the division director Minimum Requirements Include A bachelor’s degree (preferably in education)At least three years of teaching experience in an early childhood classroomExperience working with children in an educational environmentA demonstrated commitment to professional growth, collaboration and collegialityA passion and love for meeting the social and academic needs of Preschool students Durham Academy Teachers Are culturally competent and believe in the central importance of diversity and equity in the life of the school.Model a student-centered approach to teaching in an active classroom. The founders, George Watts Hill and his wife Ann McCulloch Hill, established the school as a private, independent school to educate their children and others in Durham. The school’s initial teaching philosophy (and its name) was based on the Calvert School in Baltimore, Maryland, which Ann McCulloch Hill attended as a child. In 1959, the school ended its affiliation with the Calvert School, changed its name to Durham Academy, and began an expansion that led to the first high school graduating class in 1975.
