Kellogg Food Service Assistant

Location: Kellogg Center State Room

Starting wage: $14.00 per hour, increasing to $16.00 effective 8/9/26.

Schedule

Desired working hours: 4 pm – 10 pm Thursday – Saturday, with possible differing shifts during football and busy State Room events. Schedule varies based on company needs, including early mornings (possible start at 6:00 AM), nights (until 10 PM), weekends, university-recognized holidays, semester breaks, and sporting events (including all home football game days).

• During the school year, domestic student employees may not work more than 29 hours per week; international student employees may not work more than 20 hours per week.
• During school breaks, between semesters, and during summer semester, all student employees may work up to 40 hours per week.

About the role

As a Student Food Service Assistant, you will assist full-time staff with the preparation, cooking, and plating of food for the State Room Restaurant. You will help prepare appetizers, entrees, starches, vegetables, and other items while ensuring compliance with all relevant food safety regulations, standards, and guidelines. Your role is to deliver outstanding customer service to guests of Culinary Services.

Responsibilities

• Cook, prepare, and plate food at the Kellogg Center State Room restaurant.
• Clean the kitchen after meals are served.
• Communicate with supervisors, managers, and other student team members.
• Coordinate with supervisors to complete assigned tasks each shift.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Enrolled as a student at Michigan State University (during the academic year).
• Demonstrated commitment to outstanding customer service.
• Ability to complete tasks in a timely manner with minimal supervision.
• Positive and respectful attitude, especially when working with a diverse population.
• Ability to work nights, early mornings, and/or weekends.
• Must be able to move up to 20 pounds.

Preferred Qualifications

• Serve Safe or other food safety certification.
• Experience cooking or working in a high-volume food service operation.
