Keeper I
About the role
The Keeper I reports to the Keeper IV-Lead Keeper and Animal Department Managers. This position is part of the Animal Care team and is responsible for animal husbandry, habitat maintenance, and supporting collaborative care efforts.
Responsibilities
- Effectively monitor animal health and behavior and communicate changes to supervisors and veterinary staff.
- Administer medications as needed and document in ZIMS and QOLs.
- Complete daily records in ZIMS, QOLs, and Animal Welfare forms.
- Participate in training, enrichment, research, and educational programs.
- Utilize operant conditioning and enrichment techniques.
- Maintain high performance in general keeper duties, including animal care and guest interactions.
- Support interns and volunteers.
- Participate in workshops, seminars, and conferences to improve job knowledge and professional development.
- Support Utica Zoo's strategic plan, mission, and values.
- Perform special projects, procedures, and goals set by animal department managers.
- Support conservation and research initiatives.
Requirements
- Prior related animal care experience preferred.
- Experience at an AZA accredited facility preferred.
- Effective communication skills, both written and oral.
- Experience with operant conditioning and enrichment techniques preferred.
- Computer proficiency to complete job functions.
- Able to lift 50 lbs or more.
- Valid New York driver’s license within six months of employment.
Physical Requirements
Must be able to work outdoors in all weather conditions and have the physical ability to perform strenuous work.
