Karteringen in Zeeland

About the role

This year, we are mapping two exceptional nature reserves in Zeeland: the Plaat van de Vliet and the Slikken van de Heen, on behalf of Het Zeeuwse Landschap. This diverse area features species-rich grasslands, rough vegetation, and forests. Additionally, we are conducting flora mapping along the southern coast of Schouwen for Natuurmonumenten. This area, also known as Plan Tureluur, is jointly managed by Staatsbosbeheer and Natuurmonumenten.

A portion of the parcels consists of historical karren fields, while other parts were created between 1991 and 2014 by excavating (former) agricultural land. Though the nature reserve lies inland, the saline water of the Oosterschelde significantly influences the species present. The vegetation primarily consists of saline "grasslands," where species such as glasswort, sea aster, fringed and saline spurrey, and saltmarsh grass thrive. This creates an impressive patchwork of brackish pools and vibrant green to red saltmarsh vegetation. At the transition to slightly higher areas with saline sedge, saline rush, and sea couch grass, we have also encountered a significant presence of duneland grass. These species are currently in full bloom, particularly in the second half of summer.
