About the role

Kapolei Charter School (KCS) is a free public charter school aiming to interrupt generational poverty by offering customized educational opportunities to students who may not succeed in traditional settings. The school provides an attractive, flexible learning environment with individualized attention to ensure all students can achieve academic success.

Responsibilities

  • Develop lesson plans ensuring attainment of state learning standards and specific grade-by-grade learning standards set forth in the charter.
  • Communicate and uphold school rules, values, and expectations in and out of the classroom.
  • Build relationships with students emphasizing college success and personal belief in their ability to succeed.
  • Take on responsibilities outside of content area instruction such as advisory, lunch duty, enrichment classes, and after-school activities.
  • Execute detailed lesson plans aligned with specific Common Core standards.
  • Respond to students' needs through long and short-term planning, preparing them for assessments, and providing quarterly individual student achievement reports to parents.
  • Create an inviting, innovative learning environment and accept and incorporate feedback from administrative staff.
  • Serve as an advisor to students, organizing advisory groups and overseeing their academic and behavioral progress.

Requirements

  • License issued by the Hawaii Department of Education with grades 7-12 Social Studies endorsement; or imminent graduation from state-approved teacher education program.
  • Prior relevant teaching experience in high school Social Studies or Humanities based elective courses.
  • A do-whatever-it-takes attitude, including willingness to work occasionally on weekends or evenings.
  • An exceptional ability to respond to feedback and implement it immediately.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the content matter, using a variety of instructional strategies that are academically rigorous and engaging.
  • Ability to manage classroom and student behavior, assess student progress, and modify learning activities as necessary.

  • Exceptional classroom management and student care methods and techniques.
  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written, with students, teachers, parents, and community members.

Pay

The salary range for this position is TBD, commensurate with experience.

Schedule

The schedule for this position is typically Monday through Friday, with occasional weekend or evening work as needed.
