About the role

The role of School Counselor at IDEA Public Schools leads the campus family engagement vision, social emotional learning program, and coordination of mental health and counseling supports for all scholars on the campus. The School Counselor ensures all staff are building authentic relationships with students and families, and drives campus strategies and tactics through data maintenance and analysis.

Responsibilities

  • Led the execution of the school vision for retaining all students at the school by directing and managing all stakeholders at the campus in their roles and responsibilities in family engagement and student persistence.

  • Provides individual/group counseling for at-risk students and refers students who need intense or specialized services to licensed mental health providers and outside agencies.

  • Plans and executes student and family engagement events that align with the school’s culture, community, and family needs, promoting authentic relationships between the school and the family.

  • Holds the entire campus team accountable to fulfill their roles in family engagement and student persistence.

  • Directs BOY professional development for the entire campus to clarify the roles every staff member plays in family engagement.

  • Manages campus overall student persistence data to ensure 100% accuracy and reporting, identifying and analyzing trends.

  • Supports teachers in addressing the social/emotional needs of students in the classroom.

  • Directs implementation of state-mandated guidance lessons to all students to develop life skills, promote good character, and foster resilience.

  • Conducts individual and group check-ins and advising meetings with students to address social-emotional issues and provide campus-based supports.

  • Administers parent surveys and student surveys to gather feedback and create strategic plans to respond to parent and student input.

  • Collaborates with key stakeholders to meet district expectations for successful implementation of district family engagement and social emotional learning priorities.

  • Facilitates 4 Family Engagement Events (1 per quarter).

  • Maintains the campus’ average daily attendance rate (ADA) by increasing and ensuring all students are in school on time, every day.

  • Conducts home visits for students absent 7 or more times and provides support in connecting families with community resources.

  • Trains teachers on the Move This World curriculum and provides feedback on its implementation.

  • Conducts BOY and EOY assessments on SEL competencies, school climate, safety, and sense of belonging, creating action steps to address campus needs.

  • Collaborates with the crisis response team to ensure student social/emotional needs are met.

Qualifications

  • Master's degree in School Counseling, Counseling, Social Work, Marriage and Family Therapy, or related field.

  • Previous experience in a school or school setting.

  • Valid TX School Counselor certification or counseling licensure (LMSW, LCSW, LCSW-S, LPC-A, LPC, LMFT-A, LMFT).
