About the Role

Under the direction of the Principal, Athletic Director, and Head Wrestling Coach, the JV Head Wrestling Coach coordinates and supervises the junior varsity wrestling program at Notre Dame Prep. The coach is responsible for the instruction, development, supervision, and competitive preparation of JV student-athletes while supporting the overall mission and objectives of the Notre Dame Preparatory Wrestling Program. The JV Head Coach collaborates with the Head Coach and coaching staff to ensure consistency in technique, culture, athlete development, and program expectations. The coach contributes to fostering the Catholic School culture by serving as a witness to students and the community, aligning with the spiritual, academic, and social education mission of the school.

This position requires effective communication, flexibility, forward-thinking, and the ability to manage deadlines. A wide degree of creativity, initiative, leadership, and latitude is expected.

Responsibilities

  • Instructs athletes in fundamental skills, strategy, and training to achieve individual and team success while promoting the Pursuing Victory with Honor Program. Maintains discipline, addresses student-athlete concerns, and works to increase morale and cooperation.
  • Maintains a safe, supportive, and appropriately supervised environment for student-athletes, adhering to all school, Diocesan, AIA, and applicable policies regarding supervision, safety, conduct, and communication.
  • Serves as the primary coach for junior varsity wrestlers during practices, competitions, and team activities.
  • Assists in developing season plans, practice plans, and athlete development pathways aligned with the overall program philosophy.
  • Provides technical instruction in wrestling fundamentals, strategy, sportsmanship, and safe training practices.
  • Evaluates athlete performance and assists in determining lineup recommendations and developmental goals.
  • Maintains accurate records of match results, attendance, and athlete progress.
  • Assists in the overall functioning of the wrestling program, including ensuring safe practice and competition venues, proper equipment maintenance, and inventory management.
  • Assists with tournament registration, roster management, weigh-in procedures, and event administration.
  • Demonstrates or develops proficiency in wrestling management and technology platforms, including TrackWrestling and FloWrestling for tournament management, results tracking, athlete statistics, rankings, video review, and match analysis.
  • Assists in the coordination and supervision of student-athletes in all wrestling program activities, including practices, competitions, travel, camps, and other venues.
  • Maintains open communication with faculty, staff, and parents regarding the wrestling program; advises student-athletes on academic matters in conjunction with faculty and supports college recruiting efforts when appropriate.
  • Supports engagement and retention efforts for both boys' and girls' wrestling programs.
  • Promotes the culture, values, and expectations of the Notre Dame Preparatory Wrestling Program.
  • Performs other job-related tasks as requested by the Principal, Athletic Director, or Head Wrestling Coach.

  • Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of effective coaching, teaching, and adolescent development.
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure, meet deadlines, and perform the physical requirements of the position.
  • Initiative, creativity, problem-solving skills, and good judgment in handling different personalities and emerging situations.
  • Ability to actively listen and assess individual student, teacher, and program needs.
  • Proficiency in communication skills with both students and adults.
  • Maintains a positive attitude in normal and crisis situations.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with others and delegate tasks.

Qualifications

  • Preference given to Catholic teachers.
  • Certified by the Arizona State Department of Education or AIA as a coach and meets applicable NCA requirements.
  • Meets Diocese of Phoenix requirements for employment, including completion of Safe Environment Training and signing the Code of Conduct.
  • FBI Fingerprint clearance completed.
  • Current Arizona State driver’s license is desirable.

  • Regularly required to stand, sit, walk, use hands to finger, handle, or feel, reach with hands and arms, talk, or hear.
  • Must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Must be able to stand for periods of time outside in heat and cold.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
  • Requires some evening and weekend hours.

Pay

This is a stipend position based on the season of the sport coached. Base salaries and stipends are established by the Leadership Team under the guidance of the Diocese of Phoenix.
