About the role
The State of Connecticut Judicial Branch is seeking entry-level applicants for the position of Juvenile Detention Officer Trainee. This role involves working with adolescents aged 12 to 18 who are involved with the juvenile justice system. Duties include supervision of daily activities, maintaining security, documenting detainee behavior, and intervening in potentially dangerous situations.
Responsibilities
- Supervise the daily activities of detainees
- Maintain security
- Oversee and document detainee behavior, including health, misconduct, abuse, or criminal conduct
- Instruct detainees on personal hygiene
- Take necessary actions to control detainee behavior using approved control and restraint methods
- Maintain order and discipline
- Apply handcuffs and leg restraints for detainees being transported
Requirements
- One year of experience in correctional work or institutional supervision of adolescents, juveniles, or young adults
- College training in a closely related field may substitute for the General Experience on a 15-semester hour basis
Qualifications
- Must possess a valid Connecticut motor vehicle operators license
- Must be willing to work evening, night, weekend, and holiday shifts
- Mandatory overtime is likely

Benefits
- Starting salary range is approximately $43,342 - $52,897/year for day shift positions or $45,485 - $55,040/year for night shift positions plus State of Connecticut benefits
- New employees begin at the minimum
- Existing state employees may have a higher starting salary based on existing Judicial Branch policy
