About the role

Discover a career at HMRC’s Taxes, Benefits & Enterprise Operations Platform Team. We are seeking experienced Technical Architects to help shape the future of our critical national tax infrastructure. The team manages and oversees suppliers responsible for operating and delivering services on the Enterprise Tax Management Platform (ETMP)—a core component of the UK’s Critical National Infrastructure—and HMRC’s corporate IT services through the Enterprise Operations Platform (EOPS).

HMRC is undergoing one of the largest transformation programmes in government to modernise and future-proof its IT estate. As part of this, we are evolving one of the public sector’s most complex SAP landscapes, moving from SAP ECC to SAP S/4HANA on Sovereign Cloud. Our Technical Architecture team plays a central role in this transformation—defining and governing technology strategies, designing end-to-end architecture, and steering large-scale change across a dynamic, high-value environment.

This is a unique opportunity to join a forward-thinking, mission-driven team at the forefront of SAP modernisation. Your expertise will directly influence the design and delivery of secure, scalable, and resilient services that make a meaningful difference to millions of HMRC customers and colleagues across the UK.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in the technical design of systems and services, articulating and justifying design decisions throughout the development and implementation of the new SAP S/4HANA platform.
  • Apply broad technical expertise across CDIO to translate complex technical and operational requirements into robust, scalable, and secure solution designs.
  • Drive the execution of S/4HANA migration activities, including development, testing, and deployment of SAP and non-SAP integrations.
  • Support system integration testing (SIT), user acceptance testing (UAT), and contribute to detailed cutover planning to ensure a smooth transition to the new platform.
  • Provide hyper-care and post-go-live support, troubleshooting issues and ensuring early stabilisation of services.
  • Oversee and produce high-quality documentation, including technical specifications, configuration guides, and integration mapping artefacts.
  • Act as a bridge between business requirements and technical implementation, ensuring alignment between functional needs and technical solutions.
  • Work closely with internal HMRC teams, systems integrators (SIs), and vendors, ensuring cohesive delivery, effective issue resolution, and successful outcomes.
  • Collaborate confidently with technical and non-technical stakeholders, building strong relationships and promoting clear, transparent communication.
  • Ensure service assurance and proactive risk management, identifying, assessing, and mitigating risks throughout the delivery lifecycle.
  • Support major incidents and continuous service improvement, providing expert input to resolve issues rapidly and improve platform resilience and performance.

Requirements

  • Strong technical knowledge across key SAP technologies, including:
    • SAP S/4HANA system conversion
    • SAP BTP, Integration Suite, PI/PO, ABAP
    • Work Zone, Build Apps, Build Process Automation
    • Fiori architecture and deployment models
    • Cloud deployment models (e.g., RISE with SAP, SaaS, PaaS)

Benefits

  • Salary of £37,682, with HMRC contributing £10,916 towards the Civil Service Defined Benefit Pension scheme.
  • Flexible and hybrid working policies, allowing you to balance work and personal commitments.
  • Generous leave allowance starting at 25 days, increasing by one day for every year of qualifying service up to a maximum of 30 days.
  • Pension contributions of at least 28.97% of your salary.
  • Family-friendly policies, personal support, coaching, and development.

Schedule

HMRC operates both flexible and hybrid working policies. Colleagues are expected to spend 60% of their working time in the office, with the remainder available for remote work, subject to operational and customer service needs.

Please ensure you only apply for a location you are willing and able to work from, as we will only make one offer of employment. Available locations: Worthing (Teville Gate House), Bristol Regional Centre, Manchester Regional Centre (Three New Bailey).
