Junior Survey Crew Chief

Responsibilities

  • Lead and coordinate a one or two-person field crew performing: Survey control surveys, Boundary and cadastral surveys, Right-of-way surveys, Topographic surveys, Construction staking and layout
  • Operate and maintain survey equipment including robotic total stations, GNSS receivers, digital levels, scanners, and data collectors.
  • Collect accurate field measurements, observations, sketches, and documentation.
  • Perform field calculations and quality control reviews to ensure accurate and complete data collection.
  • Maintain organized electronic field records and comply with company data management standards.
  • Aid with office-related tasks including data reduction, calculations, drafting support, and staking computations using Trimble Business Center and Civil 3D.
  • Review field deliverables for completeness and accuracy, including field notes, data collection files, and computation sheets.
  • Communicate effectively with project managers, survey staff, clients, contractors, and utility representatives.
  • Promote a safe work environment and adhere to all company and project safety requirements.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Strong foundation in mathematics, geometry, and trigonometry.
  • 4+ years of land surveying experience with demonstrated leadership potential.
  • Experience operating GNSS, robotic total station, and digital level equipment.
  • Proficiency with electronic data collection systems and field software.
  • Understanding of construction staking procedures, monumentation, and field markings.
  • Ability to interpret plans, specifications, plats, and survey records.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to meet company insurability requirements.
  • Ability and willingness to travel for project assignments, occasionally up to two weeks at a time.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate's or bachelor’s degree in surveying, Geomatics, Civil Engineering Technology, or a related field.
  • LSIT, CST, or other surveying-related certification.
  • Trimble Access, Trimble Business Center, and Civil 3D experience.
  • UAV experience and FAA Part 107 certification.
  • 3D laser scanning experience.
  • Previous experience leading or mentoring field personnel.
  • Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities Understanding of survey measurement principles and sources of error.
  • Ability to evaluate survey data for completeness, accuracy, and precision.
  • Knowledge of boundary evidence, public land survey systems, property corner recovery, and cadastral surveying principles.
  • Ability to download, process, review, and edit field-collected survey data.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities while maintaining project schedules.
  • Commitment to continuous learning and professional development.

Physical Requirements

  • The physical demands described below are representative of those required to successfully perform the essential functions of this position.
  • This position regularly requires walking on uneven terrain, hiking steep slopes, lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds of equipment, digging monument holes, setting stakes and rebar, operating brush-cutting equipment, and working outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • The role may also require operation of UTVs, climbing stairs, prolonged standing, and occasional extended periods of computer work.
