The Junior Mortgage Banker position at Newtown Savings Bank is open for a bilingual (fluent English and Spanish required) sales professional with ties to the Bridgeport market. The successful candidate will enter the Mortgage Banker Training Program, which lasts approximately 12 months and includes self-study, on-the-job training, and outside course work.

About the role

The Mortgage Banker Training Program aims to provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of the bank's mortgage processes, systems, and underwriting policies, as well as sales techniques. Upon completion, participants will be expected to build a referral network and close loans.

Responsibilities

  • Phase I (Month One through Month Three): Work closely with the Vice President, Residential Lending Sales Manager to understand the bank's mortgage process, systems, and underwriting policies. Develop a basic working knowledge of the mortgage process from application to close. Gain familiarity with credit and approval processes, including LTV and DTI. Learn about various income sources and loan programs.

  • Phase II (Month Four through Month Six): Begin taking basic applications with the assistance of the VP, Residential Lending Sales Manager. Familiarize yourself with the online mortgage application process, mortgage insurance options, FHA loans, investor loans, first-time homebuyer loans, VA loans, CHFA loans, and HELOC/HELOAN products. Understand down payment assistance programs.

  • Phase III (Month Seven through Month Twelve): Build a referral network by contacting local realtors and attorneys, participating in realtor associations, and attending functions. Ensure compliance with loan policies and underwriting guidelines. Attract new clients and close loans from application to close. Attend sales training programs and continue to identify mortgage options for potential clients.

Requirements

  • A college degree in accounting, finance, or business is preferred, or two years of relevant experience in sales, banking, financial services, or a related field with transferable skills.

  • Minimum of 2 years' sales experience is preferred.

  • Ability to manage multiple priorities, function independently after training, and meet deadlines, while effectively communicating with a diverse group of people.

  • Solid written and verbal communication skills, computer literacy, attention to detail, and self-motivation are essential.

  • Bilingual proficiency (fluent English and Spanish, Portuguese a plus).
