Junior MMRP Geophysicist
Principal Field Duties and Responsibilities
- Travel to project work sites.
- Collect DGM and AGC data in support of MMRP projects under the supervision of the Site Geophysicist for the first year, with goal of assuming this role within the first two years of employment.
- Execute geophysical operations at the task order level in accordance with the project work plan and Tetra Tech’s quality system.
- Represent Tetra Tech within industry technical forums and at industry conferences/meetings.
- Support and engage in new hardware initiatives undertaken by the enterprise as related to MMRP.
Principal Home Office Duties and Responsibilities
- Support preparation and/or review of technical memoranda.
- Attend internal and/or external training courses either virtually or in-person.
- Attend project status meetings and provide technical assistance, as necessary, to project managers and senior geophysical personnel.
- Attend internal and external continuing education and training sessions.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum bachelor’s degree in geophysics, geology or related technical field from an accredited institution.
- Willingness to work exclusively in the MMRP industry.
- Willingness to take on new tasks and learn new technology.
- Willingness to travel, as expected.
- Ability to work as part of a field team comprised of multiple subject matter experts.
- Ability to also work effectively as part of a large, diverse, virtual project team.
- Ability to multi-task and troubleshoot hardware problems in the field.
Preferred Qualifications
- 40-hour OSHA HAZWOPER certification with current 8-hr refresher (note: this certification and enrollment in a medical monitoring program are required for this position and will be provided by Tetra Tech, as necessary upon hiring).
- Demonstrable experience collecting DGM/AGC data for MMRP projects.
- Demonstrable experience with land surveying.
- Demonstrable experience with the following positioning systems: RTK GPS, RTS, SLAM.
- Willingness to pursue and obtain professional licensure or certification in directly relevant discipline (e.g., PG, PE, PGp, PMP, CQA).
Physical Requirements
- Ability to occasionally lift up to 30 lbs.
- Ability to frequently wear a backpack (approx. 25 lbs.) for several hours a day.
- Ability to regularly walk for several hours a day while pushing/pulling a wheel-mounted cart.
- Ability to wear PPE (e.g., safety glasses, gloves, work boots, etc.) when performing field duties.
- Ability to regularly drive large pick-up trucks and SUVs.
- Ability to periodically drive UTVs (and equivalent) while working onsite.
- Ability to frequently travel by air across time zones and report to project sites ready for duty.
- Ability to sit at a desk using a computer for several hours a day, when performing office duties.
Work Environment / Environmental Factors
- Work is regularly performed in variable, challenging terrain (e.g., steep slopes up to 30 degrees, rocky/uneven ground, former volcanic lava flows, soft beach sand, etc.).
- Work is regularly conducted in challenging weather conditions (e.g., high wind, high heat (e.g., 90+ degrees), high humidity and cold/freezing temperatures).
- Field work may include regular exposure to dust, stinging/biting insects, wildlife, poison plants and pollen.
Additional Information
- Typical field work schedules are 50 hours/week, Monday-Friday, although the exact work schedule is project-specific.
- Field assignments are variable, ranging from a few days to several months in duration. Home leave rotations for extended field assignments will be coordinated in advance with the Technical Manager and specific Project Manager.
- Overnight travel away from home office location is expected to be between 50% and 75%, although it may be periodically higher during surge periods. Travel destinations include primarily the United States and its territories, although international destinations are also possible.
