Junior Java / DevOps Software Engineer

AMS provides responsive, cost-effective engineering and scientific solutions ranging from air and missile defense technologies, command and control, radar systems, seekers, modeling & simulation, and prototype hardware development and testing.

About the role

The Engineer in this role will assist our engineering team in modernizing defense and enterprise software systems. You will work closely with senior developers to containerize Java-based UI applications to run headlessly in isolated environments and automate the deployment and scaling of multiple Docker containers across development and testing environments.

Location: Redstone Arsenal / Huntsville, AL (On-Site). Position is full-time in the office.

Responsibilities

• Configure and package Java applications to execute successfully in headless mode within Docker containers.
• Write and optimize Dockerfiles to build secure container images.
• Deploy, manage, and scale multiple Docker containers simultaneously using Docker Compose.
• Assist with setting up and maintaining automated build and deployment pipelines to streamline container releases.
• Participate in agile team sprints, code reviews, and technical documentation creation.

Requirements

• Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent hands-on experience).
• 0-2 years of hands-on experience with Core Java (OOPs, Collections, Exception Handling).
• Practical knowledge of creating Docker containers and using Docker Compose.
• Familiarity with running applications without a graphical display in Linux-based environments.
• Experience using Git / GitLab for source code management.
• Must be a US citizen and possess (or be eligible to obtain and maintain) a Final TOP SECRET/SSBI Clearance.
• Must be able to travel up to 10% of the year.

Preferred Skills

• CI/CD pipeline development experience.
• Basic understanding of Kubernetes for scaling containerized workloads.
• Experience with JavaFX, Gradle build systems.
• Familiarity with Cloud platforms like AWS or Azure.

Physical Requirements

• Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
• Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at a time.
• Must be able to access and navigate each department at the organization's facilities.
