Junior Engineer, FAA VCS Redline Conversion - Maryland
About the role
We are seeking a motivated Junior Systems Engineer to support the FAA Voice Communications System (VCS) project. The primary duty is to assist senior engineers in converting red-line System Configuration Documents (SCDs) into final, FAA-compliant Redline deliverables. In addition, you will perform a variety of junior-engineer tasks across the R&S portfolio.
Responsibilities
- Redline Conversion: Translate marked-up SCDs into clean Redline files that meet all FAA formatting and compliance requirements.
- Visio Drafting: Create all engineering drawings, schematics, flowcharts, and layout diagrams in Microsoft Visio, maintaining a library of reusable stencils and templates.
- Document Review & Quality Checks: Conduct initial checks of SCDs and Redlines for completeness, correct formatting, and alignment with FAA specifications.
- Configuration Management: Keep version-controlled libraries of SCDs, Redlines, and related artifacts in the team’s PLM/SharePoint environment.
- Cooking Changes: Work with procurement and supply-chain teams to execute any part-ordering or material-change requests that arise from approved redlines.
- Collaboration & Shadowing: Partner with senior systems engineers, shadowing them on design reviews, change-control meetings, and FAA liaison activities to gain deeper technical insight.
- Meeting Participation: Attend design reviews, configuration status meetings, and FAA briefings; capture action items and follow up on open issues.
- Continuous Improvement: Propose and implement enhancements to the red-line conversion workflow and Visio drafting processes.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in: Aerospace, Architectural, Electrical, Systems Engineering, or a related technical field.
- Minimum of 2 years of drafting experience (college drafting courses, internships, co-ops, or early-career drafting roles).
- Proficiency in Microsoft Visio as the primary drafting tool; experience with other CAD packages is a plus.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to interpret engineering change notices.
- Detail-oriented with a focus on accuracy and regulatory compliance.
- Familiarity with FAA or other government-agency documentation standards is highly preferred.
- Prior exposure to System Configuration Documents (SCDs) or similar change-control artifacts is preferred.
- Knowledge of voice-communication system architecture (VCS = Voice Communications System) is preferred.
- Experience with document-management tools.
- Ability to produce clear visual documentation (flowcharts, wiring diagrams) that complement written procedures.
Qualifications
- US citizen capable of obtaining a US Public Trust Clearance.
Benefits
Your total compensation for this position is $90K-$120K. Total compensation includes base salary, variable pay (when applicable) plus benefits. The range is determined by the position, geographic location and level. Individual pay within the range is determined by several factors including location, education or training, relevant work history, sales incentive structure and job-related skills.

Schedule
This role requires being in the office 3 days per week on average, and can be based in either our US Headquarters in Columbia, MD or our new facility in Frederick, MD.
