Responsibilities
- Directs batching, melting, and forming operations according to management policies and established procedures.
- Maintain safety, quality, production, costs, productivity, housekeeping, and employee relations goals.
- Coordinate and direct production activities of the batch plant, tanks, baths, and lehrs.
- Make decisions and assume responsibility for meeting unit goals.
- Discuss production activities, quality, process, operating procedures, policy, complaints, and personnel problems with supervisors, tank engineers, and other production engineers during frequent tours of the department.
- Analyze unit production and quality reports and take corrective action as necessary within established parameters.
- Maintain close communication with the Wareroom, Quality Control, and other staff functions to ensure efficient control of operations and improve performance.
- Recommend new methods, new equipment, organization, and general improvement of the Department and glass quality to Supervisor of Technical Services, Tank, or Manager, Float Process.
- Periodically inspect tank refractory structures to determine condition and coordinate ordering of materials, supplies, and equipment.
- Develop new methods or changes to equipment leading to general improvement in the operation.
- Coordinate efficient manpower scheduling within the assigned area of the unit and administer a positive training and safety program to ensure maximum performance.
Qualifications
- B.S. degree in ceramic or chemical engineering or equivalent experience.
- Thorough knowledge and understanding of float glass batch, melting, and forming processes.
- Demonstrated leadership, judgment, administrative ability, and flexibility to handle rapidly changing conditions.
